Kohima, Nagaland : The Indian Army successfully conducted Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, Ashok Chakra (Posthumous) Football Tournament at Moirang in Bishnupur district of Manipur. The finals and concluding ceremony was held at the Multipurpose Higher Secondary School. The tournament, commenced on 12 March 2025, featured eight teams across Manipur for multiple age categories. The tournament was organised in league cum knockout format. A series of thrilling and highly competitive matches showcased the region’s immense football talent. The semi-finals, held on 20 March 2025 and the final match, played on 23 March 2025, saw Football Club Raengdai (FCR) face off against Rising Athletic Union (RAU). In a high-energy contest witnessed by over 2000 spectators from Moirang and nearby villages, Team FC Raengdai emerged victorious, clinching the championship with 2-0 goal win. During the prize distribution ceremony, the winners lifted the coveted trophy, while the runners-up were honoured for their commendable performance. Awards for the Best Goalkeeper was given to Mr. Laishram Premkumar (WAFA), Best Player of the Tournament to Mr. M Jojo (RAU) and Mr. Laishram Bikramjit emerged as the tournament’s top scorer.
As part of the closing ceremony, the Indian Army honoured the family members of Late Major Laishram Jyotin Singh, paying tribute to his supreme sacrifice for the nation. The event was graced by senior Army officials including Maj Gen SS Kartikeya, GOC, Red Sheild Division, Lieutenant General KH Singh (Retd) with the presence of Padma Shri & Arjuna Awardee Oinam Devi, former Indian footballer, inspiring the young participants to strive for excellence in the sport.
This initiative aims to promote sportsmanship, fitness, and community bonding among the youth of Bishnupur, further strengthening the deep-rooted ties between the Indian Army and the people of Manipur. The tournament was successfully organized with the support of the All Manipur Football Association and District Football Association, Bishnupur, whose efforts played a crucial role in its success.
Addressing the gathering, GOC, Red Shield Division, lauded the unwavering support of the local community to Indian Army in maintaining peace and promoting initiatives under Operation Sadbhavana. He highlighted key efforts such as the establishment of a Cosmetic Production Unit and a Yarn Bank in Bishnupur District to empower women through skill development. Additionally, he emphasized the Indian Army’s role in providing training for Agniveer recruitment and special coaching for NEET and JEE aspirants, along with support for competitive exams like UPSC and SSC. He also underscored the importance of organizing sports events to nurture young talent and establish Manipur as a center of sporting excellence.
