Gorakhpur : Gorakshapeeth, the sacred site of Shiva avatar Guru Gorakhnath, is all set to worship “Maa Adishakti” as part of the Sharadiya Navratri celebrations. On Thursday, October 3, marking the first day of Navratri, Gorakshapeethadhiswar and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will perform the Kalash installation ceremony in the Shakti temple at 5 PM, signaling the beginning of the ten-day event.
Known for its unique tradition, Gorakshapeeth worships both Shakti and Shiva avatar Mahayogi Guru Gorakhnath during Navratri. The Shakti temple, located on the math’s first floor, remains the center of continuous sadhana throughout the Navratri period—both ‘Vasantik’ and ‘Sharadiya’.
A significant highlight is the coronation of Lord Ram, which takes place on the completion of Navratri. This tradition, unique to Gorakshapeeth, culminates with the presence of Gorakshapeethadhiswar during the coronation ceremony on Vijayadashami (Dussehra).
The head priest of Gorakhnath temple, Yogi Kamalnath, shared details about the traditional rituals for this year’s Sharadiya Navratri. On Thursday, October 3rd, at 5 PM, the temple will hold its traditional Kalash Shobha Yatra, a ceremonial procession led in the safety of traditional soldiers. This Yatra will include saints, priests, yogis, children studying the Vedas, and devotees.
During the procession, the chief priest will carry the Trishul (trident), a symbol of Shiva, Shakti, and Guru Gorakhnath. According to tradition, the person carrying the Trishul must remain in the temple for nine days.
At the end of the Yatra, the Kalash, filled with holy water from Bhim Sarovar, will be installed in the Shakti temple on the math’s first floor by Gorakshapeethadhiswar Yogi Adityanath. This will mark the beginning of special prayers dedicated to Mother Bhagwati.
Yogi Kamalnath also mentioned that the rituals of Sharadiya Navratri along with the celebration of Vijayadashami (Dussehra), will be conducted traditionally at Gorakhnath temple, honoring the victory of truth, justice, and righteousness. These ceremonies will take place from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Ashwin Shukla Dashami.
The head priest further shared that during Sharadiya Navratri, the reading of Srimad Devi Bhagwat and the recitation of Durga Saptashati will take place daily from 4 PM to 6 PM, starting from October 3rd and continuing throughout Navratri. On Ashtami, Thursday, October 10th, Gorakshapeethadhiswar and CM Yogi will conduct the Mahanisha Puja and Havan from 7 PM.
On Friday, October 11, CM Yogi will honor Kumari (young) girls as part of the Mahanavami Tithi fast. He will wash their feet as a symbolic gesture of respect and devotion. A feast will be held for the girls, and they will be given dakshina (gifts). Some boys representing Batuk Bhairav will also participate in this sacred ritual.
On Vijayadashami, Saturday, October 12, at 9:15 AM, Gorakshapeethadhiswar Yogi Adityanath will perform a special worship ceremony for Shrinath Ji (Guru Gorakhnath). Following this, there will be rituals for all the idols and samadhi in the temple. The Tilakotsav ceremony of Gorakshapeethadhiswar will take place from 1 PM to 3 PM.
Later, at 4 PM, Yogi Adityanath will lead a chariot procession to Mansarovar temple, where he will perform worship and anoint the idols of the gods. At 5 PM, he will perform the coronation of Lord Shri Ram at the Mansarovar Ramlila Ground. A grand feast (bhandara) will be held at the Gorakhnath temple at 7 PM.
The key events of Sharadiya Navaratri at the Gorakhnath temple will also be live-streamed on the temple’s social media platforms. Devotees can watch on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/ShriGorakhnathMandir), X (http://x.com/GorakhnathMndr), and YouTube (http://youtube.com/ShriGorakhnathMandir).
